Our dosing process
Coagulants and flocculants - removing solids
The way we treat dirty water, is to first remove the solids. We commonly use:
- Cold water for everyday cleaning and debris removal
- Hot water for cutting through oils, grease and heavy grime
Sometimes dirt will settle itself, but when it doesn’t, flocculant is the solution. The goal is to ensure the solids settle and are separated, before the water leaves the system.
We typically dose coagulant or flocculant ahead of interceptors or settlement tanks (AS1/AS2 or similar), so solids and oils are removed early. This process protects downstream filters, membranes and pumps, reducing the frequency of manual clean-outs.
Disinfection, a staged approach
- Chlorine - commonly used, easy to monitor and dose. Typical supervisory checks may be every few hours, depending on site risk and regulatory needs.
- Hydrogen peroxide - a stronger chemical treatment, for if the chlorine isn’t sufficient, or as a complementary treatment.
- Ozone (O₃) - a powerful chemical treatment, great for tough organics and microbes. Ozone systems are specialist installations and require correct off-gas handling and safety measures.
Which method (or combination) of chemical treatment depends on water quality, operational constraints and compliance requirements. We always configure dosing and monitoring to match the level of risk and the standard you need to meet.
pH control
- A pH probe sits in the tank and feeds a pH monitor/control unit.
- If the pH drifts above or below set limits, the control unit activates a dosing pump to add acid or alkali, with the use of a mixer pump, until the target pH is reached.
- This process runs automatically and continuously, so corrections happen as soon as they’re needed.
Testing first, always
If there’s an existing system on site, we’ll test the water before changing anything. Water testing tells us what’s in the feed (TDS, turbidity, oils, bacteria, pH, etc.) and whether you need coagulant, flocculant, different disinfectants or changes in dosing strategy. The right dosing comes from the data, not guesswork.
When there’s lots of dirt or solids present, a flocculant-focused approach is usually recommended. For low-level contamination, lighter dosing and filtration may do the job.
Safety, compliance and practical points
- All chemicals are stored, handled and dosed to current safety and environmental standards.
- Dosing systems can be integrated with alarms, remote monitoring and lockable cabinets.
- We document all dosing regimes, provide MSDS sheets and keep waste and residues handled correctly.
- Ozone, peroxide and chlorine require specialist safety and control measures - we design those into every system.
Maintenance and tuning
Chemical control isn’t “set and forget.” We recommend scheduled checks for pumps, probes and chemical stocks, plus routine water sampling so the dosing can be tuned as conditions change. We can include this in a planned maintenance package or offer ad-hoc tuning visits.
Want to talk specifics?
If you’re planning a new system or reviewing an existing one, we’ll start with a site visit and water tests, then propose a dosing and control layout that meets your needs. Practical, reliable and safe, that’s our promise.
